Listener Question: What about Classroom Objectives?

Written by Melissa & Lori | Aug 23, 2022 11:33:00 AM

Hi Literacy Lovers,

In this week's episode, we answer a listener question about classroom objectives. A listener emailed us, grappling with how to write classroom objectives for reading lessons, especially when the objectives often don't match what reading science tells us about teaching reading.

BIG TAKEAWAY: Let's rethink the idea of "meeting an objective" at the end of a reading comprehension lesson. This podcast is about SO MUCH MORE than classroom objectives. It's about building knowledge, assessment, and evolving outcomes to align with current practice

Consider This...

Since this podcast aired, we received several questions from listeners asking for examples of classroom learning objectives. What do these look like in high quality materials? The image below shares examples of Learning Goals from Grade 3 Wit & Wisdom ELA.

Do This, Stop This

Below, Melissa recommends such an important piece that helps us understand why it's important to place text at the center of an ELA classroom. However, I'm always looking for a practical way in! This Short Guide to Placing Text at the Center of Learning is super easy to digest: it's a Do This, Stop This T-Chart with aligned research.

Placing Text at the Center of the Standards-Aligned ELA Classroom

One of my favorite reads of all time is Placing Text at the Center of the Standards-Aligned ELA Classroom by Sue Pimentel. I mean this... it is a true favorite (I have sticky notes with quotes from this piece all over my office!). There is so much we can do right now to shift current classroom practices and keep texts at the center of instruction and assessment.
